Community Input Announced for the Trail Area Health & Environment Program

August 18th, 2010

Trail, B.C. – (July 12, 2010) Trail area residents support the tougher goals for children’s blood lead levels and local air quality proposed by the Trail Health and Environmental Committee. Participants in a recent round of community consultation expressed 75 to 92 percent support for the goals and plans of the health and environment program. “Trail Area residents have indicated their endorsement of the blood lead and air quality goals, while also encouraging the Committee to strive for more improvements”, says Committee Chair, Mayor Dieter Bogs.

“85% of the respondents to our survey fully support the proposed blood lead goal while another 10% expressed partial support.” Mayor Bogs points out that approximately 90 per cent of Trail-area pre-school children have blood lead levels below the international ‘level of concern’, 10 micrograms per deciliter. “The goal is to increase that percentage to 95% in the next 5 years,” states Mayor Bogs. “Ultimately we want all of our kids below that level. The new goal gets us closer but it will be a challenge to reach. Further reducing smelter emissions will be the biggest factor.” read full article
